A Step-By-Step Guide To Removing Window Film

Etched glass window films is not designed to be permanent, you will have to take it away it some time. The sheets can only stay in place for a few years, with adhesion strength softening as time passes. Incorrectly applied films degenerate even quicker due to surface bubbles and other installation defects.

It is best to replace window films as soon as signs of wear and tear become visible. It might require a bit of work, but observe these step-by-step instructions, and you will have everything done in about an hour.

1.    Inspect for detached edges. Gently raise these edges with your fingers or you may use a razor blade or penknife. Remove as much film as you can without tearing the film and damaging the glass surface. If you get lucky, you will be able to lift off large slices and pick them off. Older and brittle film, however, tends to break into little pieces, which are more tough to handle.

2.    Much of the film you will not be able to pull off by hand. Spraying ammonia liberally on the glass surface is necessary. Saturated with this solution, the [glueadhesive] that holds the sheets in place will begin to melt. Wipe away any excess chemical with a cloth or towel.

3.    Cover the entire pane with broad sheets of plastic or garbage bags, if available, and secure with masking tape. This seals the ammonia, allowing it soak into the film. Leave alone for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Make it two hours if the weather is colder.

4.    You may check to see if the film has sufficiently weakened every 15 minutes. If there are no obvious results, you may spray another application of ammonia and wrap the pane once again.

5.    If the film is adequately soft, use a razor blade or any thin piece of metal to scrape it off. For tough spots, you can continue to apply ammonia and work it in.

6.    Continue scraping and spraying until all pieces have been taken away. Scrub any traces of adhesive with soap, water and a sponge. Wash off thoroughly. Once the glass surface is yhoroughly clean, wipe it dry using a paper towel or rubber squeegee. For a clear appearance, apply glass cleaner.

Helpful tips

•    When dealing with ammonia, wear a pair of gloves and safety glasses, plus a mask. This is especially critical if you’re disposed to allergies.

•    Make sure the area is well-ventilated when you use ammonia. If necessary, open the other windows of your home to let the air circulate.

•    If you use an ammonia-based cleaner, make sure it can be applied on window films.

•    Water may be tapped as a substitute to ammonia. This will not ruin the molding or window frame, although getting rid of the film will not be as quick.

•    Cover furniture and other items with tarpaulin or garbage bags to prevent equipment casualty caused by the chemical.

•    For wide areas covered with window film, use a new razor blade when it becomes dull.

There is no single method of removing window film. The approach may differ slightly for various types of decorative window tint film. But certain rules are universal. One, pull the film slowly so as not to tear the material. Two, have the adhesive dissolve and loosen up. And three, practice caution while scraping off any residue.
